MFS Marks First Major Show Following Company’s Strategic Shift

In a recent discussion with Sarah Oakley from British sofa manufacturer Sofa Connections, we explored the company’s rich history, future goals, and its recent involvement in the Manchester Furniture Show.

Founded in 1995 by brothers Brian and Paul Oakley, Sofa Connections quickly became known for its high-quality furniture. Initially marketed through a prominent trading partner, the company recently transitioned leadership to Brian’s son, Matt Oakley, who, with his wife Sarah, is now guiding the business towards a new trajectory.

Sarah Oakley shared insights about their strategic shift: “We’ve been in manufacturing for over 30 years. The company, started by Brian and Paul Oakley, was handed down to Matt and me three years ago. We decided to pivot towards direct sales to retailers, bypassing intermediaries.”

Discussing current market conditions in the UK, Sarah remarked, “The market remains quiet at the moment, with a general reluctance to explore new options. We hope for improvement and are gearing up for the Long Point show in September to generate interest with new products like our bestselling Churchill sofa.”

The Churchill features a refined arm design, foam-wrapped seats with fiber backs, and versatile styling suitable for both modern and traditional interiors. Another highlight, the Blake down, boasts a scooped arm design and ultra-soft foam seats.

Sarah noted that while specific trends are not yet evident from repeat orders, current advice from interior designers indicates a preference for neutral tones and greens. “The UK market tends to favor traditional styles,” she added.

Reflecting on their debut at the Manchester Furniture Show, Sarah said, “It was a successful first major event following our strategic shift. We made valuable connections, and our new pieces received positive feedback. We are already signed up for the January Furniture Show next year.”

Sarah also appreciated the Women in Furniture Network Brunch, where La-Z-Boy’s CEO provided inspiring insights. Looking forward, Sofa Connections plans to enhance its brand presence, support local independent retailers, and collaborate with interior designers and the contract market.
