Munich is Set to Get a New Daycare Center Designed by Kéré Architecture

With great excitement, the building’s groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 18. TUM anticipates that the building will significantly contribute to the creation of the best possible working environment for university personnel and students. The daycare facility is situated in a space between two buildings on Gabelsbergerstraße on the main campus in Maxvorstadt.

Standing directly across from it is TUM’s iconic Thiersch Tower, designed by the man who gave the structure its name and finished it in 1916. The new Francis Kéré and Hermann Kaufmann building, which is more than a century younger, will be located in the center of the institute’s buildings and only require brief paths for parents dropping off and picking up their daycare children.

The detached five-story building known officially as “Ingeborg Pohl Kinderoase a der TUM” is slightly set back from the street and fits well with the surrounding structures’ proportions. A folded, earthy-toned Corten steel slat exterior with a distinctive patina will adorn the structural timber structure. Behind the slats, the building envelope is primarily made of glass and there will probably be multiple levels of interaction between the inside and outside. The building will resemble a lantern when the sun sets. In the future, the perception will be emphasized by the substantial buildings that will surround it.

The facility provided can accommodate up to 60 children until 2025. They will have access to approximately 700 m2 (7,500 ft) of space. An outdoor play area named “Himmelswiese”—“field of the heavens”—will be located on the roof of the five-story structure.
